Taking a break from revisions to write up my annual end-of-year book post.
This year I consciously went back and forth reading a book by an author of color for every book by a white author. This was a challenge I’d issued on Twitter at the start of the year to try to encourage people to be mindful of what they were reading, and I found it to be surprisingly more difficult than even I’d anticipated. But I just calculated it and it comes out to: 51% of books I read this year were by writers of color. Though it takes a bit more planning, I’ll definitely stick to this reading pattern going forward.
(On a related note, 69% of the books I read this year were by women, which also surprised me. I had been under the impression that I’d read more female authors than that.)
So anyway! Here are my favorite books that I read this year and which were published this year:
Night Sky With Exit Wounds by Ocean Vuong
The Queen of the Night by Alexander Chee
When The Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore
Girl In Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow
BOOK IN A FANTASY SERIES
The Winner’s Kiss by Marie Rutkoski
And my favorite book I read this year but which was not published this year:
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
